Overview

This hands-on training course explores VMware Infrastructure 3, which consists of VMware ESX Server and VMware VirtualCenter, and has been updated to reflect version 3.5. Upon completion of this course, you can take the examination to become a VMware Certified Professional. This course is a prerequisite for a course entitled VMware Infrastructure 3: Deploy, Secure, and Analyze v3.5.


Course Objectives

At the end of the course, you should understand the functionality in VMware Infrastructure 3 and be able to:


  • Install ESX Server
  • Configure ESX Server networking and storage
  • Install and configure VirtualCenter
  • Control user access to the VMware infrastructure
  • Deploy and manage virtual machines using VirtualCenter
  • Allocate and monitor virtual machines' resources
  • Ensure high availability of applications

Troubleshooting guidance, best practices and lab exercises are interspersed throughout the course.


Target Audience

System administrators, systems engineers, and operators responsible for ESX Server and/or VirtualCenter.


Prerequisites

System administration experience on Microsoft Windows or Linux operating systems.

  • Configuration of virtual switches, network connections and port groups

  • Storage management technologies


Module 5: VirtualCenter Installation

  • Set-up of VirtualCenter components


Module 6: VM Creation and Management

  • Use of templates
  • Use of VMware Converter Enterprise
  • Manage using VMware VirtualCenter and Web Access
  • Use of Guided Consolidation


Module 7: Virtual Infrastructure Access Control

  • Controlling administrator rights


Module 8: Resource Management

  • VMotion migrations
  • Set-up of resource pools and a VMware Distributed Resources Scheduler (DRS) cluster
  • Setting VM priorities on CPU, memory, and other resources


Module 9: Resource Monitoring

  • Workload assessment
  • Monitoring using VMware VirtualCenter


Module 10: Data and Availability Protection

  • Backup strategies
  • Set-up of VMware High Availability (HA) cluster


Module 11: Planning VI Deployment
